Welcome to the Sports Union
Sport is one of the most valuable and rewarding aspects of university life. University offers a fantastic opportunity to experience new sports, to enjoy recreational sport and, of course, don't forget the social life!
Sports clubs are the main way that students engage with sport, at whatever level, and the main way people can progress from spectator to participant to high performer. They have an acknowledged and primary role in fostering sport in the community. Our sports clubs offer and promote opportunities for "more people to be more active, more often" (sportscotland, 2000). We also try to support and achieve high sporting performance, within local, regional, national and international competition.
The Sports Unions primary objective is to provide sporting opportunities for all staff and students, no matter their age or ability, to fulfil their ambitions within a safe, structured and supportive framework. The aim is to provide a framework that caters for sport from participation to elite levels by strengthening our links with all relevant experts in the field, both internally and externally, so as to provide the best possible sporting opportunities for all. We have clubs that compete in programmes run by Scottish University Sport (SUS) the British University Championships (BUCS) together with recreational clubs.
February 2010 saw the second Tay Games Varsity Challenge between Abertay and Dundee University. The event saw 250 athletes compete in 11 sports to see which university holds the sporting bragging rights. The plan is for the event to grow year on year to include more sports, more athletes and more teams.
